La noticia tiene una inmediata repercusi\u00f3n internacional, porque adem\u00e1s de la barbarie, entre los sacerdotes asesinados se encuentra un intelectual de prestigio, Ignacio Ellacur\u00eda. La posici\u00f3n de los Jesuitas de la UCA era inmejorable para mediar en un previsible acuerdo de paz y su talante sin tacha, la herramienta ideal para poner fin a una d\u00e9cada de guerra cruenta. Inmediatamente el Gobierno culpabiliza a la guerrilla del FMLN, pero una testigo presencial echa por tierra la versi\u00f3n oficial. Se llama Luc\u00eda Barrera de Cerna y trabaja como empleada de la limpieza en la UCA. Aquella noche ella vio qui\u00e9nes son los verdaderos asesinos: el Ej\u00e9rcito.
